Anxiety Therapy

Have You Forgotten What Fine Actually Feels Like?

What if you’ve been doing “fine” for so long, that you actually forgot what it feels like to be okay? You function and show up. You have your friends, and your family. You are getting things done with your career. From the outside, it looks like you have everything put together.

However, inside, you always have the hum of nervousness, or feel on edge. Your mind is rarely quiet as there is always something to worry about. Once you resolve it, there is always something else. It seems like your mind needs to worry on something in order to function. You feel like you cannot stop or control the worrying, even when there is nothing to worry about. Your replay conversations over and over again, thinking about what you could have said differently. You lie awake in the middle of the night trying to work through problems that haven’t happened yet.

Anxiety isn’t just you being sensitive, or something that you can problem solve your way out of. Anxiety is your nervous system working in overtime to protect you from perceived threats from the future, or mistakes from the past.

Therapy for anxiety isn’t about getting rid of the worry completely. What we work on is loosening the grip it has on your daily functioning, in order for you to make decisions without second-guessing yourself. It allows you to break free from the guilt and worry you have about making a “wrong” choice, and stop spending energy on something that no longer serves you.

Anxiety also frequently pairs with depression, burnout, and hormonal shifts in women. When combined with any of these, it can amplify the anxiety significantly.

At Perspectiva Counseling, we provide virtual anxiety counseling for adults in New Jersey with a nonjudgmental approach that is tailored for your specific needs.

Signs You May Be Experiencing Anxiety

  • Your mind won't slow down

You overthink decisions and will replay conversations in your head, wondering if you did or said something wrong. You will have your thoughts spiral, one leading to the next, and it feels hard to break the pattern. It’s almost as if your brain is looking for a problem to happen before it does, with it constantly asking “what if this happens.”

  • You feel pressure all of the time

There is an overwhelming need to be productive, all the time. Even when you have time to relax, you are constantly thinking “what should I be doing,” or “what next.” Instead of enjoying it, you feel guilty for taking a break. It’s hard for you to be present because you are thinking about the future.

  • You feel it in your body

Your body feels tense, restless, or on edge. Even if your thoughts don’t have any worries, you can feel the anxiety physically. You have a pit in your stomach, a tightness in your chest, and your heart races. It’s hard to fall asleep, even when you are exhausted.

  • You get stuck in cycles

There is cycle where you seek reassurance, whether its combing through the Internet for answers, or asking your partner the same question a million times. However, when you get the answer you are looking for, it only brings a temporary relief before the anxiety starts again. You go back and forth on decisions, and feel stuck in fear of making the wrong choice. You avoid things that feel overwhelming, just to be overwhelmed even more because of the avoidance.

How Therapy Can Help Anxiety

Therapy can help multiple symptoms of anxiety. Here at Perspectiva, we use a humanistic, CBT informed approach, meaning our work together starts with understanding your experiences with anxiety, not applying a one-size-fits all definition from a text book.

The humanistic approach means that your experiences are the focus of sessions. We are not here to tell you that your worries are irrational or that you can just have more positive thoughts. We specifically dive deep into your life to understand how anxiety affects you, what it protects you from, and what a calmer, more relaxed version of your life can feel like.

CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) provides a practical toolkit to understand the patterns your mind makes with feedback loops and avoidance behaviors. Once the patterns are identified, we can gently shift your thinking by recognizing when you are perseverating and catastrophizing, and building the skills to respond differently.

This is what work in therapy for anxiety can look like:

Identifying your triggers to see what situations or thought patterns set off your anxiety

Challenging anxious thinking patterns such as the “what ifs,” and the worst case scenarios.

Reconnecting with your body through mindfulness techniques and learning to work with the physical sensations

Addressing the underlying roots such as past experiences, perfectionism, people pleasing tendencies, fear of failure, and relationships.

Who We Work With

Anxiety is one of the most common experiences, and you don’t have to go through this alone. We help those who have spent years going through the motions find peace and comfort.

We especially love working with:

  • Adults experiencing stress or worries after any type of life transition

  • High achievers who feel like they have to keep it together, all the time, but are truly struggling underneath

  • Women with anxiety who have spent years being told they need to “get over it”

  • People who have tried therapy before and felt like the standard approach just isn’t it.
