You’ve Been Holding It In, For a Long Time

You take care of things. People depend on you whether it’s at work, home or in your relationships, and you come through. You’re so good at managing and adapting, that no one sees you are exhausted keeping it all together.

Underneath it all, you are struggling. Maybe you've noticed it as a quiet numbness and the feeling of being tired that doesn't lift no matter how much you sleep. It is the feeling that you've spent so long being who everyone needs, that you aren’t sure who you really are anymore. You have felt the weight of carrying it all, with not enough space to put any of it down.

Women are socialized from a very young age to prioritize others, to minimize their own needs, to be composed, and endlessly available. That doesn't leave a lot of room for the full complexity of your inner life or to have a place to share what you are really thinking.

Therapy is one of the few spaces where all of that gets to exist without apology. At Perspectiva Counseling, we offer online therapy for women in New Jersey. We are a woman owned, warm, affirming, genuinely nonjudgmental space to explore what you're carrying and start figuring out what you actually need.

What Brings Women to Therapy

  • Anxiety & Feeling Overwhelmed

Woman carry anxiety that is unique to them due to the mental load, the constant planning and anticipating, the hyperawareness of everyone else's needs, and the pressure to do everything well. It’s exhausting in a way that's hard to explain to people who haven't felt it. We'll work on understanding what's driving it and building a different relationship with it.

  • Life Changes

You’ve experienced major life changes unique to being a woman. This could look like a new family member, pregnancy, a new career, house, or family. Life changes, while exciting, can often bring stress and anxiety, or that intense feeling of being overwhelmed.

  • Depression and Emotional Flatness

Depression in women often looks different than in men. It can look more like emotional numbness, disconnection, loss of interest, or a persistent sense that life is happening at a slight remove. Hormonal shifts, life transitions, and the cumulative weight of unmet needs all factor in to how depression presents.

  • Identity & Self-worth

Years of putting others first, measuring your value by what you produce and how well you care for others all impact the way you view yourself. Therapy is a place to untangle your sense of self from external validation and start building a relationship with yourself that doesn't depend on whether you're being enough for everyone else.

  • Perfectionism & People-pleasing

Many women feel an inability to say no due to the dread of disappointing someone. There’s also the inner critic that always lives in your mind rent free. These patterns often have deep roots in family systems, early messages about what women are supposed to be, and the constant influence of society. Therapy is a place to unpack what you have learned, and create healthy boundaries for yourself.

  • Trauma & PTSD

Women experience trauma at disproportionate rates such as sexual assault, relationship abuse, childhood trauma, racial and gender-based harm. If you're carrying something from your past, this is a space where it can be held with care and worked through at your pace.

How We Approach Therapy for Women at Perspectiva

Therapy can help with the multiple struggles that come with being a woman. Therapy offers a space where you can be your true, authentic self, without any judgement. By giving you a place to share your inner thoughts and feelings, it allows you to process what is happening in your life.

We use a humanistic, CBT informed approach, meaning we start from deep respect for your experience, your autonomy, and your inherent capacity to know yourself.

Humanistic therapy means we don't come in with assumptions about what your life should look like or who you should be. We're genuinely curious about your experience and we hold space for that without judgment. In a world that has a lot of opinions about what women should feel, want, and do, we want you to have a space that’s all your own.

CBT informed approaches give us practical tools to work with the thought patterns that so often drive women's distress. We'll work on recognizing those patterns and gently, collaboratively shifting them over time.

We also bring a feminist and culturally aware lens to everything we do. That means we understand that many of the struggles women bring to therapy are the predictable result of living in systems that have, in many ways, not been designed with women's full humanity in mind.
