Attention Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Your smart, and it may seem like you have it all together from the outside. You have a career, a social life, and a family. However, what people don’t see are the emails that pile up, or the deadline that crept up on you, and now you are scrambling to finish the project. The racing thoughts that never seem to stop in your mind.

Living with ADHD, or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder as an adult doesn’t look the way most people envision. It’s not just losing your headphones or keys for the millionth time. It’s the exhaustion from the constant hum of thoughts in your brain. It’s the anxiety and shame that come after missing a deadline and dropping the ball. Every day feels incredibly overwhelming while everyone else can make it through with no problem.

If this sounds familiar, you are not alone. ADHD is one of the most common and misunderstood experiences in adulthood, especially for women. Many women are often diagnosed later in life after being told they were “too much,” or “lazy and not trying hard enough.”

Here at Perspectiva Counseling, we offer online ADHD therapy for adults in New Jersey that’s more than coping skills and CBT worksheets. We are here to dive deeper into your brain and understand how to work with it, in a world that is not designed for neurodivergence. We specialize in helping you manage the depression and anxiety that frequently partners with ADHD. The goal is to create a supportive environment that puts your brain first.

What ADHD Really Looks Like in Adults

  • Your thoughts feel nonstop

Your mind is constantly racing, even when you are trying to rest. You feel like you are always trying to remember to do something, but then get distracted by something else. You jump from one thought to another before getting to finish what you originally started. It’s almost as if you have 100 tabs open in your brain.

  • It's difficult to stay organized

Whether you have one planner or 20, it feels like no matter what you do, you are always scrambling to keep your life organized. You procrastinate and rely on the pressure of doing something last minute. Even with a system or routine in place, it is difficult to keep things clutter free. You may forget appointments or lose items.

  • Your emotions feel intense

You get overwhelmed easily, and not understand why you can’t “just do it.” You may think of yourself as lazy or get frustrated for not reaching your potential. You always feel like things are a much bigger deal than they actually are. Everything seems harder than it has to be, and you watch others around you easily able to manage. Above all, you are your toughest critic, even when you are trying your best.

  • You're stuck in exhausting cycles

Do you find yourself mentally drained during the day, and want nothing more than to go to sleep? However, when you are in bed, you find yourself doom scrolling or binge watching that TV show you’ve already seen 10 times. ADHD can cause you to get stuck in unhealthy cycles, even when you want to stick to the routine you’ve created. Many people often experience sudden bursts of motivation followed by burnout.

How We Approach Therapy for ADHD at Perspectiva

ADHD, especially in women, has been misunderstood for years. It may lead you to think you need to “fix” yourself, when what you really need is support from someone who gets it. Our therapists have lived experience with ADHD, so they don’t just empathize what you are experiencing, they personally know and have real world expertise.

We use a humanistic, CBT informed approach to ADHD, which means we start with you. Your experiences are the foundation of therapy. We are not here to tell you how you should function, or how to mask in the world. We are here to understand how your brain interacts with the world, and what a meaningful, workable life looks like specifically for you.

CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) provides more practical tools to help reframe thoughts, and gain a new perspective. We will evaluate thought patterns and behaviors that are not serving a purpose in your life. You will also have a greater understanding of how to manage overwhelm and emotional burnout, build self-trust, and create systems that fit your life. In this space, you will have a place to unmask, and be your true authentic self .

Virtual therapy sessions for ADHD often work on the following:

Unpacking the shame and self-blame that come from years of struggling.

Building systems that actually work for you in a neurotypical world.

Managing emotional dysregulation that comes with ADHD

Addressing co-occurring anxiety or depression that often comes with ADHD.

Online ADHD Therapy, Built for ADHD Minds

The traditional, in-person therapy model can be one of the hardest things for someone with ADHD to maintain. There is a fixed time that often is at the connivence of the therapist. In-person offices require you to drive and park, often adding more time that you need to plan for your day. This is a lot of moving pieces for a brain that has difficulties with executive functioning and time blindness.

Online therapy removes most of those barriers. You can join the session from your home, your car, or even your bed as long as you are in New Jersey. There’s no commute, no waiting room, and no corporation to jump through hoops with. We understand how your mind works, and try our hardest to work with you.

We offer flexible scheduling, a 24 hour cancelation policy, and a consistent structure that makes it easier to build therapy into your routine. We want to make it as easy as possible to get the support you deserve.
